What is an X-Ray?
• An X-Ray is a common imaging test that helps your doctor gets detailed images of the inside of your body without making an incision. The images help the doctor in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating various medical conditions.
Why is an X-ray performed?
- analyse an area where you are experiencing pain or discomfort
- examine the growth of a diagnosed disease, such as osteoporosis
- evaluate how well a prescribed treatment is working
Medical Conditions for which you may need an X-ray include:
- Orthopaedic conditions
- bone cancer
- breast tumors
- enlarged heart
- blocked blood vessels
- conditions affecting your lungs
- digestive problems
- fractures
- infections
- osteoporosis
- arthritis
- needing to retrieve swallowed items
What To Expect in an X-Ray?
X-ray is usually a standard procedure, where you don’t require steps to prepare for them.
Before the Procedure
- Depending on the area that your doctor is examining, you should wear loose, comfortable clothing that helps you to move around. You may even be asked to wear a hospital gown. You will have to leave any metal objects at home.
- You should tell the technologists or radiologists of any surgeries that you may have through or any implants from prior surgeries. These implants hinder the images by blocking the X-rays.
- In some cases, special dye called a contrast material will be used for X-ray. This substance helps in improving the quality of the images.
During the Procedure
- X-ray technician or radiologist will tell you ways on how to position your body to create good images. During the test, you may be asked to lie, sit or stand in different positions.
- Always, stay still while the images are being taken.
- If your radiologist is satisfied, then the images will be gathered.
After the Procedure
- After the examination, you will be asked to wait until the technologists check the images for some more images.
- Your doctor will evaluate your X-rays and the report from the radiologist to strategize on how to proceed.
- Depending on your results, the doctor may order some additional tests to develop an accurate diagnosis.
Are there any risks involved with it?
- • You will be exposed to low radiation, and thus there are very low risks.
- Tell your medicine personnel of any allergies beforehand to avoid any complications.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, always tell your doctor and radiology technologist beforehand.
